About Me

I developed a sense of humor as a defense mechanism so when a bear attacks me, I think, “Be charming.”

Matthew S. Starr is a comedy writer/actor living in NYC. Currently, he is a Writer/Performer Fellow at Above Average.

Matthew has written for television programs on MTV, MTV2, and TruTV, as well as being a contributor to CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, and Splitsider. His short film, Grief: A Comedy, was featured in the LA Indie Film Fest. He also wrote all of the comedic remarks for the 2015 Chef's Roast, a charity gala in Washington D.C. featuring Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and Richard Blais.  

Matthew is the host of We've Got Questions, a weekly talk show on Above Average. He has appeared in the Verizon Go90 series Thanksgiving, Mike Birbiglia's Don't Think Twice, and in videos featured on AV Club, CollegeHumor, Cracked, UCB Comedy, Huffington Post, and many other web sites.   

Matthew performs at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City on Harold Night (Tuesdays). He performed for two years around the country with the UCB Touring Company. Matthew also is the host/lead singer for Seriously, Are You Ready To Rock? A Battle of the Bands Show.

Matthew thinks museums are fucking awesome, and he is a tour guide at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for Museum Hack. He also teaches a pilot-writing workshop in NYC.

Matthew is a graduate of The Ohio State University.
